Magi-Knights

Veil Keeper | Dayen Saint-Clare

  • Age: 16
  • Birthday: February 29th
  • Occupation: Student, Magi-Knight
  • Likes: Video games, being a Magi-Knight, Khierix, new wave music, horror fiction, the color blue
  • Dislikes: Small talk

A junior at Frost Peak Academy, Dayen always has a cold and distant gaze, as if he is looking through people. He walks purposefully and typically seems disinterested at school. He has a medium build and is well-groomed.

Dayen never did find much joy in the tedium of life, but for a long time, he endured it. He never did it for himself and he never did it to make his parents happy; he did it for Teresa, his 12 year old, angelic sister. She has always had this picture-perfect, imaginary idea of her older brother and even if that image she has of him is dead wrong, he’s always done his best to live up to it.

That all changed when Teresa was diagnosed with brain cancer (grade 3 astrocytoma) at the tender age of 11. She was kind and strong, but maybe too pure for this world and would soon leave it. As she began to drift away, so too did Dayen, in every aspect possible. That was, until a strange red panda appeared and offered him an exchange that he was all eager to accept: Become a Magi-Knight, become the hero his sister always believed he was, and save her life in the process.

Now his priorities have entirely shifted. After all, really just how important is school or even friends beyond fellow Magi-Knights when there are horrific Outsiders and an alien world connected to your hometown? Nothing else matters anymore, except making sure Teresa stays alive and stays safe.

Heart Keeper | Verity Faye

  • Age: 16
  • Birthday: April 30th
  • Occupation: Student, Magi-Knight
  • Likes: Animals, psychology, cute things, ice skating, romantic comedies, the color pink
  • Dislikes: Unhappy endings

Verity is a junior at Frost Peak Academy who often wears a gentle smile and comes across as warm and inviting. Her hair, accessories, and overall appearance are always immaculate.

Verity has always attracted large groups of friends with her pretty face, silver tongue, and her stylish clothing, but it wasn’t until her freshman year at Frost Peak that people began to genuinely like her. In earlier school years her friends were all popular mean girls who would put down other students at every chance they got, and while Verity rarely joined in on the misconduct, she also never did anything to stop them. This continued until Verity became the class president of her freshman year, and she met Marianne Wong, the new class historian. Despite the vast differences in their personalities, Verity grew to enjoy her company. So, when Verity’s malevolent friends picked Marianne as their next target to ridicule, that was the last straw. Verity told each one of them off, and they then decided that Verity was their new number one prey. Having the tables turned on her has instilled a deep understanding of and compassion for others, so Verity now uses her gift of charm to aid and uplift other students.

Although she never admitted it before, the mean girls Verity once considered her friends were very oppressive and made her feel she had to hide her true self. Now that she is free of them, she’s embraced her love of all cute things, especially animals, and her enjoyment of any time with her family.

Zeal Keeper | Justus Toussaint

  • Age: 16
  • Birthday: January 14th
  • Occupation: Student, Magi-Knight
  • Likes: Martial arts, outdoors, motorcycles, swimming, geometry, the color red
  • Dislikes: Disrespect

Justus is a junior at Frost Peak Academy who is passionate about his life, but has a hard gaze. He walks confidently and upright, almost never slouching. He is well-built and chiseled.

Justus lives alone with his father, who is a retired Marine Sergeant and now a Math Teacher at Frost Peak Academy. Ever since the passing of his mother, Roseline, neither of them have been the same. His father became harsh and exacting, while Justus himself turned hard, but determined. Both of them remain good people, but they’ve lost their ability to communicate with one another. However, Justus wants nothing more than to make his father proud, though he considers his dad to be larger than life and always feels like he ends up failing to meet the standards set before him.

Justus often carries the crucifix his mother left behind and wears it always, as a memento to her warmth, love, and what he’s lost. But it only makes him that much more determined to find it again.

Song Keeper | Carmen Castillo

  • Age: 16
  • Birthday: July 23rd
  • Occupation: Student, Magi-Knight, Freelance Singer
  • Likes: Cats, singing, songwriting, concerts, flower arranging, the color yellow
  • Dislikes: Party poopers

Carmen is a junior at Frost Peak Academy with a natural physical strength that she easily maintains by helping her family with their highly successful carpentry and delivery business. She is vocal about her wishes and is generally a cheerful person, unless she happens to wake up on the wrong side of the bed.

Carmen is a second generation American. Her parents, Ernesto and Paloma, moved from Mexico to the United States with their families as children. As such, Mexican culture and the Spanish language are rich in Carmen’s household.

It didn’t take long for Carmen to show her affinity for music and singing as a child, and when she was nine years old she discovered the Spanish and English-speaking singer, Sirena Quintana. She instantly fell in love with her music and adopted her as her role model. Carmen’s parents have been mostly supportive, but they insist that she at least finish at Frost Peak Academy before she fully pursues her dreams to become a famous singer.

Through all of Carmen’s private voice lessons and practice sessions over the last several years, she’s always had at least one consistent audience member, and that is her beloved cat Ritmo.

Path Keeper | Cyrus Lockwood

  • Age: 16
  • Birthday: December 2nd
  • Occupation: Student, Magi-Knight
  • Likes: Camping, programming, brain-teasers, comedy, being the center of attention, the color green
  • Dislikes: Restrictions

Cyrus is a junior at Frost Peak Academy who tends to hide his high intelligence from everyone but his closest friends. He’s always smiling and cracking jokes, and doesn’t have a drop of shyness in him. Some people might find him annoying, while others think he’s hilarious, but either way, everyone knows who he is, and he knows everyone else, too.

Cyrus has always loved the outdoors. As an energetic child, he played in the dirt, built mud castles, drew with sticks, and imagined himself as a wolf pup running free through the forest. As he grew older and his family faced hardship, it was this love of nature that sustained him. Though some might see being homeless for a year as adversity, Cyrus used the wild to create inventions that helped him thrive, and he never felt as constrained as he later would within four walls.

Eventually, life improved for the Lockwood family, but it became more difficult for Cyrus. His grizzled, quirky father received psychiatric help for trauma from the war, and his mother’s real estate career skyrocketed. It was as if they had won the lottery, and Cyrus’s life changed overnight. While his siblings, Nellie and Isaac, began to excel, Cyrus struggled for a time to adjust to what most considered a “normal” life.

Before long, however, he discovered the comfort of computers. Taking quickly to programming, he explored the still new and not fully understood digital world. He relished the challenges, excelling at solving complex problems. Combined with his quick sense of humor, these skills helped him make friends at Frost Peak Academy, where he learned to balance his love for the outdoors and his conventional life.

Star Keeper | Emiko Yokota

  • Age: 16
  • Birthday: June 6th
  • Occupation: Student, Magi-Knight
  • Likes: Volleyball, soccer, visiting the beach, stargazing, ceramics, the color purple
  • Dislikes: Secrecy

Emiko is a junior at Frost Peak Academy with quick reflexes and a fit body type. She often comes across as anxious at first, but once she convinces herself she can handle a situation, she’s always able to pull through with a smile.

Throughout Emiko’s childhood, she and her family moved back and forth between Tokyo and Lapis City as Otomo Corporation assigned her father Ichiro temporary work in his home country. When Emiko was nine years old, her mother Bridget grew tired of this lifestyle, and so Ichiro agreed to finally settle down in Lapis City. The peace in their home only lasted for a short time, however, because when Emiko was 11, Bridget decided she wanted a divorce, and she left Ichiro and her two children behind. Emiko and her little brother Hiroshi felt abandoned and never completely overcame that pain, but they were comforted by their friendship with each other, and their loving and devoted father.

Emiko’s love for volleyball began when she was only six years old, and that love bloomed into devotion as she grew older and more skilled. Hiroshi has often played with Emiko at their local recreation centers in exchange for her practicing soccer with him. This has greatly benefited both siblings as they have developed lightning-quick reflexes that have made them easy picks for their school teams every year. Hiroshi has also taught Emiko how to get her “head in the game” and play like a star, even though she often has a tendency to criticize herself and overthink her choices in other aspects of her life.
