LAPIS CITY NEEDS MORE THAN STRONG HEROES. IT NEEDS HEART. IT NEEDS HOPE. IT NEEDS YOU. AWAKEN AS A MAGI-KNIGHT!

Magi-Knights Awakening is a tabletop roleplaying game with rules based on the 5th Edition SRD. This game is our love letter to the 90s TV shows that inspired our imaginations: Sailor Moon, Power Rangers, Dragon Ball Z, and more! If you’re familiar with the popular Persona video games, if you like superheroes that transform, or just enjoy the idea of attending school by day and fighting evil by night, you’ll love our game!

MKA’s gameplay is tailored to slice of life drama, solving mysteries, and bearing the responsibilities of a Student and a Hero. Every Episode you play is designed to maximize memorable interactions between the Game Master (and his Herald), Players, and NPCs!

Become a Magical Hero, make unforgettable friends, redeem corrupted NPCs, and save the world! It’s all done through the power of your Soul Crystal, the Herald, and the Magi-Knights Awakening System!

Your Student Persona

In Magi-Knights Awakening, your Student Persona is possibly just as important as your Magi-Knight Persona! You’ll either be attending the prestigious, international high school, Frost Peak Academy or Blackmote University. Both FPA and BMU are extremely well-funded and staffed by prestigious professors. Attending either of these internationally recognized places of learning is a great honor and a privilege with incredibly fierce competition.

However, there’s something even more important there: a never-ending supply of juicy gossip! Whether its rumors of the latest kidnapping victim, strange behaviors of other students, or what the last episode of Paranormal Seekers was about, you’re sure to find the best leads at school! Just try to study every once in awhile, okay?

Your Magi-Knight Persona

Magi-Knights are unique individuals with the power to save others against the forces of the Invading Evil! Regular people by day and Magical Heroes by night, they must balance both the pressures of their personal lives and also their heroic duties.

But being a Magi-Knight isn’t easy… you’ll need to learn to balance Exhaustion, Stress, and even Trauma! Luckily it isn’t a journey that you have to take alone. With your Magi-Knight Squadron, you can engage in Formations, use Combination Maneuvers, and even train New-Rice Magi-Knights or be a Mentor to a Magi-Squire!

Remember, Magi-Knights are the only ones who know about Outsiders and Cultists, so it’s all up to you, your squadron, and your Herald to save Lapis City!

Herald & Mentor (GMNPC)

Khierix the Herald is just as his title implies. He is a being that comes from a far distant planet and has journeyed through the vast universe in order to reach Earth. He is an omen of the ending of Earth’s natural order.

The Herald possesses otherworldly academic, mathematical, and alchemical knowledge and other incredible mystical powers, not the least of which is the ability to awaken Magi-Knights through the power of the Soul Crystals!

Khierix the Herald (or a different Herald of their choice) is controlled by your Game Master! They are the group’s Guide, Mentor, and Merchant, so treat them nicely. They did save your life after all, so don’t be ungrateful!

Mortals - Friends or Foes?

A Magi-Knight’s Soul Crystal only reacts to the presence of Outsiders, but until a Cultist makes themselves known and uses their nefarious magic or you catch them red-handed in Cultist activities, it’s hard to tell who is a friend and who might be a foe! Worst case scenario, they sometimes turn out to be a frenemy!

You’ll need to use your deductive skills and gain Social Points with various NPCs located throughout Lapis City, to discern if they just made a stupid mistake when they joined up that “edgy school club,” or if they realize that Earth’s future isn’t looking so good and have already started hedging their bets?!

Cultists, Outsider Servants

A Cultist is exclusively a mortal that has sworn their allegiance to a powerful Spectral Outsider or Harbinger in exchange for a taste of power or a significant desire. This could be staving off the death of a loved one, granting unearthly powers for personal gain, or a plethora of other reasons that might drive humans to sell their souls to darkness.

Once a Magi-Knight severs a Cultist’s connection to the Invading Evil (by defeating them in battle), their body is restored to normal, and the Cultist typically loses the powers bestowed to them by the Outsider. Sometimes however, it may be better to use your Social Abilities to convince a Cultist to turn away from their horrific masters and help out the Magi-Knights instead!

Outsiders From Elsewhere

Spectral Outsiders partially exist in a different dimensional plane of reality and, as such, are imperceptible to most humans. However, people unknowingly describe their presence as the spontaneous appearance of foreign smells, piercing or buzzing in the ears, an uncontrollable shiver, a sudden drop in temperature, or a variety of other “common” occurrences.

Typically, only Magi-Knights can detect Outsiders and only their Soul Weapons can harm them. Strangely enough, they are focused on abducting humans and bringing them back to Elsewhere, rather than eating them (at least, usually).

Life in Lapis City & the 90s!

Lapis City is the capital city of the Lazuli Region. It serves as an open location that can be set anywhere in the modern world and defaults to the mid-1990s time period.

Magi-Knights Awakening takes place in this seemingly normal, everyday city that is destined to become the battleground for the Magi-Knights and the Invading Evil (though its citizens don’t know anything about all of that)! It’s up to you to save as many people as you can, turn as many Cultists away from evil as possible, and save the day, everyday, in Lapis City!

“Everything about it, from the school [and] heroism balance, juggling identities, the goofy mascot creatures, the magical arsenals and named power attacks. Everything here just oozes with the Magical Girl [and] Sentai genre.”

Colby Whittaker

“This book is packed with beautiful illustrations and imaginative mechanics that evoke the wonder and excitement of Magical Girls. Character creation contains flavor for a variety of playstyles, and this resource contains everything a table might need to get started in this colorful world.”

Brooke Whitney

“Magi-Knights looks like the perfect RPG for Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, and ‘90s anime fans.”
